Miscibility of Polyolefin Blends

چکیده
Phase separation in polymers is important for many technical applications but is difficult to predict theoretically. Recently, extensive experimental studies on the miscibility of polyolefins revealed that these systems display a wider variety of mixing behavior than their chemical similarity suggests. In order to predict phase diagrams of polyolefin blends from pure component properties, we have developed a method in which small scale simulations of local interactions are combined with an analytical model for the thermodynamics, the Born-Green-Yvon lattice model. In this work, we present results for a variety of polyolefin blends and show that the new approach yields qualitatively correct results for phase separation in these blends, including the effects of varying pressure and molar mass of the components on phase separation temperatures.

Miscibility of polyolefin blends from a Born-Green-Yvon lattice model in conjunction with small scale simulations
The large variation in miscibility of blends of polyolefins is related to the architecture of the chain molecules. In this paper we present first results of an approach in which small scale simulations of local interactions are combined with an analytical model for the thermodynamics, the Born-Green-Yvon lattice model, to predict phase diagrams of polyolefin blends from the pure component prope...
متن کاملRheological Investigation of the Influence of Short Chain Branching and Mw of LDPE on the Melt Miscibility of LDPE/PP Blends
The influences of short chain branching (SCB) and molecular weight (Mw) of low density polyethylene (LDPE) on its melt miscibility with polypropylene (PP) were investigated by rheological techniques. Rheological measurement and different data-treatment techniques as well as rheological models suggest that blends of PP with LDPE of high SCB (22 CH3/1000 C) are miscible at all compositions. Howev...
متن کاملRheological study of heterogeneities in melt blends of ZN-LLDPE and LDPE: Influence of Mw and comonomer type, and implications for miscibility
It is estimated that 60 to 70% of LLDPE enters the market as blends (Utracki 1989a), primarily with other members of the polyolefin family, e.g., LDPE or polypropylene (PP). Despite the long history of polyethylene (PE) blending and its widespread use, many questions about the homogeneity of such blends, with obvious implications for thermodynamics and for the rheology, are still not answered t...
متن کاملStructure Development from Simultaneous Phase Separation and Crystallization of Metallocene Polyolefin Blends
Introduction Olefin polymers are the most widely used materials in the plastics industry today. To optimize their properties and processibility, blending is often used. This is particularly important for the metallocene-catalyst based polyolefins. By altering certain shear-thinning and strain-hardening characteristics, blending can enhance the processibility of the material. This is in addition...
متن کاملFocused Review The Influence of Chemical Structure on Polyolefin Melt Rheology and Miscibility
The ability to predict polymer properties from a knowledge of the chemical architecture of the chains is one of the main goals of polymer science, and achievement of this can be very useful in the development of new polymeric materials. In this paper the connection between dimensions of polyolefin chains and some of their most fundamental properties, such as the degree of entanglement and misci...
